First impression: It's bright. The Rudy Project Sterling helmet comes in a variety of colors, but there are several models in Rudy Project's "FLUO" line that are very brightly colored (the company's trademark sunglasses have similar options). Mine was green and had matte-type finish, with blue accents. Children of the 80s rejoice. If you hadn't noticed, neon appears to be back. I've seen similar bright green colors on both professional tennis and golf circuits this spring. I actually liked the green and one can't be "too visible" on the roads these days. The coloration and overall design is stylish, as one would expect from the folks at Rudy. Floro-coloration aside, the Sterling stands out for comfort. Sizes are small/medium and large, but each has numerous micro-adjustments, including three different "height" adjustments. Height refers the orientation in which the helmet sits on the head relative to the ears, forehead etc. The internal frame can be moved up or down within the main styrofoam body. A tension disk in the back provides excellent range of circumference adjustment to dial in the perfect fit. Over the course of a couple months in the spring I wore the helmet over a thick winter cycling hat, with a smaller headband, and with nothing at all, and each ride I was able to dial in a very comfortable fit. There are two sets of Velcro-attached pads; one standard set and one with a built-in protective mesh material. I rode on a cool morning and the mesh provided a nice barrier. On warmer days it catches sweat and provides modest protection from the sun as well. The velcro allows for easy removal of the mesh and pads for cleaning or air drying as a single unit. Generous vents and aero considerations throughout complete the quality technical aspects. The Rudy Project Sterling helmet will not be mistaken for a nano-weight race lid (stated weight 13 oz), but the fit and comfort are superior such that it basically disappears on the ride.
