overview

As the lightest serial disc brake ever made the R1 is the premier XC race brake on the market today. Custom tuning drops the stock weight of 298 grams by further 16 grams. Despite its low weight, the R1 generates more than enough power and performance for an All Mountain or Enduro use. The forged master cylinder body and caliper provide increased modulation, braking power and durability, while the R1’s patented caliper piston system increases fluid capacity in the caliper providing stability and fade resistance even on long descents. New for 2012: upgrade your brakes with our new FCS (Feeling Control System), SpeedLock and MixMaster.

The top of the race brake heap for a couple of years, Formula’s R1 feels fantastic for a featherweight brake. The minimalist forged master cylinder and calliper makes it possibly the lightest 180mm brake available (by a gram over SRAM XX) and the optional carbon blade can drop the 160mm version to 263g. The lever is flip-flop for easy fitting, although the tiny red anodised bolts need careful treatment to stop them rounding out when removing/installing. Syringe-based bleeding needs patience to get consistent results and careful bedding in is essential for decent pad life. Initial power, particularly in the dry, is impressive for the weight and the firm feel of the braided hose-equipped brake is superb. There’s occasional squeal but otherwise the consistent, smoothly squeezed, fine modulation won big points. The big bore calliper means it’s not unduly bothered by heat either. Bigger distribution muscle from new UK importers Silverfish should mean that previous spares availability gripes are reduced. This leaves only the high price as an issue, but separate packaging of brake (£220) and rotor and mounts kits (£35+) makes for financial flexibility.
